Last weekend we moved the domains www.spamdrain.net, pop.spamdrain.net and imap.spamdrain.net to our new servers. This means that we’re now almost completely running on the new infrastructure we first wrote about back in March. It’s taken a bit longer than we expected back then but now we’re almost there.

The only thing remaining now is to move the services providing filtering for our domain filtering customers. We will do this during the coming months and we hope this will be completed by the end of the summer. Most of you who use the domain filtering service won’t have to do anything and won’t notice. No need to change your MX records.

If you have set up your firewall as recommended in our FAQ you will only have to make sure to update the rules so that it doesn’t block the IP addresses used by our new servers. Please make sure your firewall has been configured to accept all traffic on port 25 (or the port used by your mail server) from the following IP addresses:

85.24.138.228
85.24.138.229
85.24.138.129
62.75.203.192 - 62.75.203.223 (62.75.203.192/27)

You can read more about how to configure your firewall in our FAQ (log in required).

You can now log in to your personal pages and view statistics for your subscription. Currently there are charts displaying the amount of filtered spam, viruses and regular messages as well as the percentage of all spam SpamDrain has been able to catch for your accounts. The charts display statistics for the last week, the four last weeks and the last 6 months. Here’s an example:

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any suggestions for improvements or have a request for additional statistics that you think we should add. Please send an e-mail to support@spamdrain.net.

Please note that the accuracy statistics is based on the spam you report back to us when SpamDrain makes a mistake. If a spam message slips through to your inbox you must report it to us (go to Report after you’ve logged in) or else it won’t be included in the statistics.

Spammers often use clever tricks to disguise the actual link of the site they are trying to fool the recipient into visiting. The latest trick is to construct a Goggle search link which utilizes Google’s “I’m feeling luck” feature.

Clicking such a link is identical to manually entering a search query on Google and clicking the “I’m feeling lucky” button. Google will run the query and automatically redirect your web browser to the top most result matching that query. For a spammer this is quite easily exploited. All he needs to do is to construct a Google query which returns the spammer’s site at the top of the result. One way to achieve this is using Google’s inurl search operator. E.g. inurl:E87ABD4CB56 will only return pages which contain E87ABD4CB56 in the address. It shouldn’t be hard for the spammer to come up with something unique.

So why would a spammer do this? Well, some spam filters use addresses in e-mails to determine if they are spam or not. By using Google addresses, some spam filters could get confused because Google is usually a trusted site. For a spam filter which only cares about the host name in the addresses (i.e. www.google.com) this could be a problem. Other spam filters, which look at the entire address, shouldn’t be affected by this trick.

Hello Sir/Madam,
I am Oleg Kalina, owner Softline, we specializingin enterprise application development, systemintegration, corporate networks and other software solutions for business, finance, and for various types of problems.
My company based in Ukraine. We’ve earned ourselves a reputation of a reliable and trustworthy partner working successfully with a number of West European companies and providing them with reliable software development services in financial and media sectors.
Unfortunately we are currently facing some difficulties with receiving payments for our services. It usually takes us 10-30
days to receive a payment and clearing from your country and such delays are harmful to our business. We do not have so much time to accept every wire transfer.
That’s why we are currently looking for partners inyour country tohelp us accept and process these payments faster.
If you are looking for a chance to make an additional profit you can become our representative in your country. As our
representative you will receive 8% of every deal we conduct. Your job will be accepting funds in the form of wire transfers and check payments and forwarding
them to us. It is not a full-time job, but rather a very convenient and fast way to receive additional income. We also consider opening an office in your country in the nearest future and you will then have certain privileges should you decide to apply for a
full-time job.
Please if you are interested in transacting business with us we will be very glad.

Please contact me for more information via softlineuapoljob@aim.com and send us the following information about yourself:
1. Your Full Name as it appears on your resume.
2. Education.
3. Your Contact Address.
4. Telephone/Fax number.
5. Your present Occupation and Position currently held.
6. Your Age

Please respond and we will provide you with additional details on how you can become our representative. Joining us and
starting business today will cost you nothing and you will be able to earn a bit of extra money fast and easy. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us with all your questions.

Sincerely,
Oleg Kalina,
Director of Softline
